PROTECT YOUR CHILD FROM EXCESS SCREEN TIME IN THE POST-PANDEMIC ERA

Screen time is the total time spent per day in viewing mobile phones, TVs, computers and tablets.Although gadgets can help improves knowledge, social interaction, child-parent bonding and social behavior in children when used in a balanced and healthy way, excess screen time has shown to cause problems like speech delay, hyperactivity and reduced socialization.

Research shows that average screen time increased from 3-5 hours a day to 5-8 hours during thepandemic. Dr. Guru Prasad, Neonatologist and Pediatrician, Anu my baby Hospital, Vijayawada, elaborates more in conversation.

What is the recommended screen time for children?

Brain development is rapid in initial 2 years and babies learn from exploration and experiencing their environment by sight, sound, taste and texture.

  •          < 2 years: do not expose to screen (except for video call with family members)
  •         2 to 5 years: less than 1 hour
  •          Older children: any time that interferes with physical activity (1 hour), sleep (8-9 hours), schoolwork and family time is considered prolonged screen time. 

Effects of prolonged screen time

Physical problems 

  •          Sedentary lifestyle and obesity
  •          Sleep disturbances
  •          Headaches
  •          Dry & itchy eyes, vision problems
  •          Neck, back and wrist pain 

    Psychological problems

    ·         Speech delay

    ·         Behavioral problems (aggression, ADHD, violence, depression)

    ·         Reduced social interaction

    ·        Decreased school performance

    TIPS FOR PARENTS TO LIMIT SCREEN TIME FOR CHILDREN

    1.       CONTENT: Ensure you research and familiarize yourself with apps before introducing them to your child. Co-watch whenever possible and avoid games with violent content.

    2.       PRIVACY: Install parental controls and anti-virus software and use safe browsers and apps that have restricted access to inappropriate websites. Educate your child about online privacy and safety.

    3.       DEVIATE: Suggest other activities like family board games, puzzles, story books, painting or outdoor activities like going to the park.

    4.       SET LIMITS: Restrict device usage during meals, family time and at least 1 hour before bed. Keep TV and other electronics out of the bedroom, dining table, kitchen, bathroom and motorized vehicles.

    5.       BE A ROLE MODEL: Practice what you preach. Limit your phone usage and excessive use of electronics. Spend quality time with your child.
